Though the country is only 10,908 km2 in size and landlocked, Kosovo is rich with nature and tradition. Surrounded by high mountains that form natural borders with its neighbors, its central plain is divided into two valleys, Kosovo and Dukagjini, which are both irrigated by rivers that sustain agriculture—one of the main economic sectors in the country. The Drini i Bardhë (White Drin) River has the largest drainage basin in Kosovo. The smaller Nerodime River bifurcates into two different seas, a very rare natural phenomenon. Kosovo’s rivers flow into the Aegean Sea, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
The two highest mountain ranges are the Sharri Mountains, continuing into Macedonia, and the Rugova Mountains, which are part of the Albanian Alps. At 2,656 meters, Gjeravica is the highest peak, and best accessed from the town of Junik. Scattered through these ranges, visitors will find many artificial and glacial lakes that provide great summer getaways. The largest lake is Gazivoda (9.2 km2), located at the northern tip of the country and continuing into Serbia. Radoniq (5.06 km2) lake, near Gjakova, and Batllava lake (3.06 km2),near Prishtina, are also picturesque artificial lakes that supply their surroundings with drinking water.
Stretches of snow cover the pine forests and green meadows of the Sharr Mountains, the peaks holding on to their white cover even during summer. This alpine mountain range expands from southern Kosovo to northern Macedonia, providing impressive views of high peaks and glacial lakes. Great for hiking, skiing, and mountain biking, a large part of the mountains has been turned into a national park.
